Mortal Kombat Unchained PSP Description

Mortal Kombat: Deception, released in 2004, is the sixth installment in the Mortal Kombat series by Midway. It follows the events of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. The game was initially available on PlayStation 2 and Xbox, later on GameCube, and finally on PlayStation Portable as Mortal Kombat Unchained. Deception continues the story from its predecessor, focusing on the resurrection of the Dragon King Onaga. After defeating Quan Chi, Shang Tsung, and Raiden, Onaga aims to conquer the realms. Earthrealm’s defenders, including characters from previous games, unite to stop Onaga’s reign of terror.

In the game, there are a total of 26 characters available, including nine newcomers to the series. “Deception” introduces new features like chess and puzzle games featuring “MK” characters, along with an online mode. The Konquest Mode, which originated in “Deadly Alliance,” returns, but this time, it follows the journey of Shujinko, a warrior manipulated by Onaga to find artifacts that would enhance Onaga’s power. Unlike “Deadly Alliance,” where the Konquest Mode primarily involved the Kombat Tower, “Deception” offers a different experience with elements of open-world exploration integrated into the story progression.

Ed Boon, one of the creators of the series, crafted Deception to bring unpredictability to the fighting game genre. He introduced new features like minigames to surprise players. Taking inspiration from Deadly Alliance, elements such as combos and arenas were revamped for a more realistic and interactive experience. Deception garnered positive reviews from video game critics, particularly for its engaging fights and innovative features. However, the Konquest Mode faced criticism for its subpar voice acting. Despite this, many publications hailed Deception as the top fighting game of 2004.

Unchained Features

The game’s arenas, like those in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, have new features. Some have weapons to pick up, while others are branching, allowing fights to continue in new areas. Most levels now have deathtraps, instantly killing players knocked into them. The “Combo Breaker” lets players interrupt combos three times per match. Unlike Deadly Alliance, Deception characters have two Fatalities and a hara-kiri suicide move. Two minigames, “Chess Kombat” and “Puzzle Kombat,” feature MK characters. Konquest mode is back as a roaming adventure with its plot.

The “Krypt” from Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance returns, hiding extra content in “koffins.” Deception’s Krypt has 400 koffins, reduced from 676, some requiring keys found in Konquest mode. It includes twelve bonus characters (six in the GameCube version).

Storyline

Following the events of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Raiden’s warriors are defeated, allowing the Deadly Alliance (Shang Tsung and Quan Chi) to claim victory. They use the distraction of the tournament to gather souls for their Invincible Army. Raiden, the lone survivor, tries to fight back but is overpowered. The Deadly Alliance splits as they vie for control of Shinnok’s amulet. However, their plans are disrupted when the Dragon King Onaga is resurrected. Raiden, Quan Chi, and Shang Tsung team up to stop him, but their efforts fail, leading to a colossal explosion that only slightly affects Onaga. Now, Onaga aims to use the Kamidogu, powerful artifacts capable of destroying realms. Surviving fighters, including Mileena posing as Kitana, and resurrected defenders, stand against Onaga’s forces.
